How much mud, tape and screws per sheet of drywall

Answers to “how much mud per sheet” vary wildly online. This chart uses one published source: USG’s estimating table from its installation guide, which gives compound, tape and fasteners per 1,000 sq ft of Sheetrock panels. Everything below is that table divided down to a sheet or multiplied up to a job.

The USG figures

USG, How to Install and Finish Sheetrock Brand Gypsum Panels (J371). USG notes that compound coverage “can vary widely depending on factors such as condition of substrate, tools used, application methods and other job factors.”
Per 1,000 sq ft of drywallAmount
All Purpose ready-mixed joint compound10 gal (USG’s All Purpose submittal also gives about 10 gal, or 37.8 L per 100 m²)
Plus 3 lightweight all-purpose compound9 gal
Paper joint tape370 ft
1-1/4 in Type W drywall screws (12 in on ceilings, 16 in on walls)2.7 lb
Wallboard nails (7 in on ceilings, 8 in on walls)5.3 lb
First Coat primer2.5 gal (at 400 sq ft per gallon)

Per sheet

USG’s per-1,000-sq-ft figures scaled to one sheet. One gallon is 4 quarts.

So a 4 × 8 sheet takes about a third of a gallon of all-purpose compound, 12 ft of tape and a tenth of a pound of screws. The worked pages: how much mud per sheet of drywall, how much drywall tape per sheet and how many drywall screws per 4x8 sheet. By count rather than weight, a 4 × 8 sheet on a wall takes 28 screws at USG’s spacing and 35 on a ceiling: how many drywall screws per sheet for a ceiling.

Per job

Pails rounded up to whole 4.5 gal pails. Sheets are area ÷ 32, before any waste allowance.

A 12 × 12 room with 8 ft walls, walls and ceiling less a door, is 508 sq ft: about 5 gallons of mud (two pails), 188 ft of tape and 1.4 lb of screws. The board count for it is on how many sheets of drywall for a 12x12 room.

Why your own job may use more

  • Corners and bead. USG’s figures are for “a typical room”. Closets, soffits, stairwells and window returns add corners per square foot.
  • Butt joints. The square ends of sheets aren’t tapered and take more compound to feather flat. Longer sheets mean fewer butt joints.
  • Coats. The figures assume the usual three-coat finish: tape coat, fill coat, finish coat. A beginner’s heavier coats and extra touch-up coats can use 20–30% more.
  • Skim coating a whole wall for a Level 5 finish is a separate, much larger amount: how much joint compound to skim coat a 12x12 room.

Buckets, boxes and bags

  • Pails and cartons. USG’s All Purpose ready-mixed comes in a 4.5 gal pail and 3.5 or 4.5 gal cartons (“boxes”). A pail does about 450 sq ft, or 14 sheets of 4 × 8.
  • Setting-type powder (hot mud) is sold by weight in bags and mixed with water; it is common for the tape coat and deep fills but is not covered by the gallon figures above.
  • Tape rolls come in 75, 250 and 500 ft (USG catalog). A 250 ft roll does about 21 sheets of 4 × 8.

After the mud: primer

Finished drywall needs a primer before paint, because paper and compound absorb differently. USG’s table assumes its First Coat primer at 400 sq ft per gallon, the same figure as Sherwin-Williams’ ProMar 200 primer: how many gallons of primer for 1,000 sq ft of new drywall.

CautionSanding joint compound makes fine dust that irritates the airways. USG’s safety data sheet calls for minimizing dust and using a NIOSH-approved respirator where exposure isn’t controlled; wet-sand or use a vacuum sander, and seal the room.

Frequently asked questions

How many sheets of drywall does a 5 gallon bucket of mud cover?

A 4.5 gal pail (the usual ready-mixed size) covers about 450 sq ft at USG’s 10 gal per 1,000 sq ft: roughly 14 sheets of 4 × 8.

How much joint compound for 1,000 square feet of drywall?

About 10 gallons of all-purpose ready-mixed compound or 9 of lightweight, by USG’s estimate.
