How many drywall screws per sheet for a ceiling?
A 4 × 8 sheet of drywall on a ceiling with joists 16 in on center takes 35 screws at USG’s 12 in ceiling spacing: 7 joists with 5 screws each.
How to work it out
- Ceiling: a 4×8 sheet crosses 7 joists at 16 in; 5 screws down each at 12 in = 35 per sheet × 1 = 35
- Plus 10% extra = 39 screws
- By weight, USG’s table gives 2.7 lb of 1-1/4 in Type W screws per 1,000 sq ft: 32 sq ft → 0.1 lb
Ceilings get more screws than walls, because the board hangs from them. USG’s installation guide spaces ceiling screws 12 in apart, against 16 in on walls, so a 4 × 8 ceiling sheet takes 35 screws instead of 28.

- Each sheet is counted with its own edge screws, even where it shares a stud with the next sheet; that matches how sheets are actually fastened.
- Set every screw just below the paper surface without breaking it; a screw that tears the paper holds nothing and needs another next to it.

What to know about screwing off a ceiling
- 35 per 4 × 8 sheet across joists 16 in apart: the 96 in length crosses 7 joists, and the 48 in width takes 5 screws at 12 in.
- Joists 24 in apart: 5 joists × 5 screws = 25 per sheet, but check the board: USG’s table allows 1/2 in board on 24 in ceiling joists only across the joists, and only 16 in if a water-based texture will be sprayed on.
- 4 × 12 sheets: 10 joists × 5 = 50 per sheet at 16 in.
- Insulation on top. USG lists a maximum weight of unsupported insulation for each board and spacing; heavy blown insulation over 1/2 in board on 24 in joists can make ceilings sag.
Lift the sheet tight to the joists and drive a few screws in the middle first, then work out to the edges. A panel lift or a helper with a T-brace is the difference between a flat ceiling and a sore neck.
The wall version is how many drywall screws per 4x8 sheet. A whole ceiling’s board is on how many sheets of drywall for a 12x12 ceiling: three 4 × 12 sheets, 150 screws.
