Drywall calculator: how many sheets for a room?
Enter the room and choose whether the ceiling is included. Large openings come off (USG’s guide says not to bother with small ones like outlets), and a waste allowance covers cut-offs.

- Drywall area
- 508 sq ft
- Walls alone (if bought separately)
- 13 sheets
- Ceiling alone (if bought separately)
- 5 sheets
- You’ll also need (USG estimate)
- about 5.1 gal of joint compound, 188 ft of paper tape and 1.4 lb of 1-1/4 in drywall screws
Walls: 2 × (12 ft + 12 ft) × 8 ft = 384 sq ft − openings 20 sq ft = 364 sq ft
Ceiling: 12 ft × 12 ft = 144 sq ft
508 sq ft × 1.1 waste ÷ 32 sq ft per 4×8 sheet = 17.46 → 18 sheets
- Sheets are counted by area plus the waste allowance. Plan the layout too: hang ceilings first, run sheets across the joists or studs, and stagger the end joints.

Sheets by sheet size (same room)
| Sheet | Sheets to buy |
|---|---|
| 4×8 | 18 sheets |
| 4×10 | 14 sheets |
| 4×12 | 12 sheets |
| 54 in × 12 | 11 sheets |
Walls are the perimeter times the height; the ceiling is length times width. Count only big openings: USG’s installation guide says to subtract doorways and picture windows but not to bother with small openings such as electrical boxes. New to this? Drywall words explained.
How many sheets of drywall: the formula
walls = 2 × (length + width) × height − large openings ceiling = length × width sheets = (walls + ceiling) × (1 + waste) ÷ sheet area 4×8 = 32 sq ft · 4×10 = 40 · 4×12 = 48 · 1200 × 2400 mm = 2.88 m²
Example: a 12 × 12 ft room with 8 ft walls has 384 sq ft of wall and 144 sq ft of ceiling. Take off one door (20 sq ft) and add 10% for waste: 508 × 1.1 ÷ 32 = 17.5, so 18 sheets of 4 × 8, or 12 of 4 × 12. That room is worked through on how many sheets of drywall for a 12x12 room.

- How many sheets of drywall for a 2 car garage: 24 × 24 ft, walls and ceiling, with the garage door out.
Choosing sheet size and thickness
- 4 × 8 sheets are the easiest to carry, fit in most vehicles and suit 8 ft walls hung vertically or horizontally.
- 4 × 10 and 4 × 12 cut the number of joints (less taping) on long walls and ceilings; they need two people and a way to get them inside.
- 54 in wide sheets hung horizontally cover a 9 ft wall in two rows.
- Thickness: 1/2 in is the usual for walls; ceilings and fire-rated assemblies often use 5/8 in. The drywall sizes chart lists what each is for, and the drywall weight chart what each weighs.
Tips
- Hang the ceiling first, then the walls, with the wall sheets holding up the ceiling edges.
- Run sheets perpendicular to the framing where you can, and stagger end joints so they don’t line up on the same stud.
- Keep joints away from the corners of doors and windows; joints that start at a corner crack.
- Store sheets flat and dry. USG’s handling guidance warns that sheets stacked on edge can topple.
What you’ll need
- Drywall T-square (48 in)Budget price
Scores a full-width sheet square in one pass. USG’s tool list includes a 4 ft straightedge or T-square.

Sets each screw just below the surface without tearing the paper, which a regular drill makes hard to do consistently.
See options on Amazon (opens in a new tab) - Drywall panel liftPremium price
Holds a full sheet against the ceiling while you screw it off. For one person hanging a ceiling, it’s close to essential.

Measuring rooms, openings and sheets. A wide, stiff blade reaches across a ceiling without buckling.

Frequently asked questions
How many sheets of drywall for a 12x12 room?
18 sheets of 4 × 8 for walls and ceiling with 8 ft walls, a door taken off and 10% waste, or 12 sheets of 4 × 12. See how many sheets of drywall for a 12x12 room.
How do I calculate drywall sheets?
Add the wall area (perimeter × height, less big openings) and the ceiling area, add 10–15% for waste, and divide by the sheet area: 32 sq ft for a 4 × 8, 48 for a 4 × 12.
Should I subtract windows when estimating drywall?
Only big ones. USG’s guide says to subtract large openings such as doorways and picture windows but not small ones like electrical boxes; most window cutouts end up as waste anyway.
How many sheets of drywall for a 2 car garage?
About 28 sheets of 4 × 12 for the walls and ceiling of a 24 × 24 ft garage with 8 ft walls, the garage door and an entry door taken off. See how many sheets of drywall for a 2 car garage.
How much joint compound and tape will I need?
The result shows USG’s estimate: about 10 gallons of all-purpose compound and 370 ft of tape per 1,000 sq ft of drywall. The joint compound calculator does it in pails.
