Drywall screw calculator: screws per sheet
Enter the sheets on walls and on the ceiling, the sheet size and the framing spacing. Screws go in a row down every stud or joist the sheet crosses, spaced as USG’s installation guide shows: 16 in apart on walls, 12 in on ceilings.

Wall: a 4×8 sheet crosses 7 studs at 16 in; 4 screws down each at 16 in = 28 per sheet × 1 = 28
Plus 10% extra = 31 screws
By weight, USG’s table gives 2.7 lb of 1-1/4 in Type W screws per 1,000 sq ft: 32 sq ft → 0.1 lb
- Each sheet is counted with its own edge screws, even where it shares a stud with the next sheet; that matches how sheets are actually fastened.
- Set every screw just below the paper surface without breaking it; a screw that tears the paper holds nothing and needs another next to it.
Quick answers for common sizes
| Example | Answer |
|---|---|
| How many drywall screws per 4x8 sheet | 28 screws per sheet (wall, studs 16 in apart) |
| How many drywall screws per sheet for a ceiling | 35 screws per 4×8 sheet (12 in spacing) |
| How many drywall screws per 4x12 sheet | 40 screws on a wall, 50 on a ceiling |
Screws per sheet by sheet size
| Sheet | Screws per wall sheet |
|---|---|
| 4×8 | 28 |
| 4×10 | 32 |
| 4×12 | 40 |
The count follows USG’s installation guide: screws 16 in apart on walls and 12 in apart on ceilings, along every framing member the sheet touches, for single-layer 1/2 in board with 1-1/4 in Type W bugle-head screws on wood framing. New to this? Drywall words explained.
How many screws per sheet of drywall
members crossed = sheet length across the framing ÷ spacing + 1 screws per member = sheet width along the member ÷ screw spacing + 1 screws per sheet = members × screws per member

| Sheet | Wall, 16 in studs | Ceiling, 16 in joists | Ceiling, 24 in joists |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 × 8 | 28 | 35 | 25 |
| 4 × 10 | 32 | 40 | 30 |
| 4 × 12 | 40 | 50 | 35 |
A 4 × 8 sheet on a wall crosses 7 studs at 16 in (0, 16, 32 … 96 in) and gets 4 screws down each one at 16 in spacing (0, 16, 32 and 48 in): 28 screws. On a ceiling the screws close up to 12 in, so 5 per joist: 35. Worked through on how many drywall screws per 4x8 sheet and how many drywall screws per sheet for a ceiling.
Buying screws by the pound
Screws are sold by weight. USG’s estimate is 2.7 lb of 1-1/4 in Type W screws per 1,000 sq ft of board at this spacing (and 5.3 lb if you use nails instead). A 5 lb box covers about 1,850 sq ft, or around 58 sheets of 4 × 8. The count of screws per pound varies by brand and length and is printed on the box; the calculator’s pound figure is USG’s.
Tips
- Keep screws 3/8 in or more from the paper-bound edges and drive them straight; angled screws break the paper.
- Hold the sheet tight to the framing while you drive the field screws, starting in the middle of the sheet and working out.
- 1-1/4 in screws suit 1/2 in board on wood; 5/8 in board usually takes 1-5/8 in. Steel studs need fine-thread screws.

Sets each screw just below the surface without tearing the paper, which a regular drill makes hard to do consistently.

A cheap alternative to a screw gun for a room or two: a clutch collar stops each screw at the right depth.
