How many drywall screws per 4×8 sheet?
A 4 × 8 sheet of drywall on a wall with studs 16 in on center takes 28 screws at USG’s 16 in spacing: 7 studs with 4 screws each. Buy about 31 screws per sheet to allow for drops.
How to work it out
- Wall: a 4×8 sheet crosses 7 studs at 16 in; 4 screws down each at 16 in = 28 per sheet × 1 = 28
- Plus 10% extra = 31 screws
- By weight, USG’s table gives 2.7 lb of 1-1/4 in Type W screws per 1,000 sq ft: 32 sq ft → 0.1 lb
Twenty-eight is the number for a 4 × 8 sheet on a wall. Hung horizontally across studs 16 in apart, the sheet lands on 7 studs, and each stud gets 4 screws down the 48 in height at 16 in spacing, the wall spacing in USG’s installation guide.

- Each sheet is counted with its own edge screws, even where it shares a stud with the next sheet; that matches how sheets are actually fastened.
- Set every screw just below the paper surface without breaking it; a screw that tears the paper holds nothing and needs another next to it.

What to know about screwing off a 4×8 sheet
- Horizontal or vertical, still 28. Hung vertically, the sheet crosses 4 studs and gets 7 screws down each.
- Studs 24 in apart: 5 studs × 4 screws = 20 per sheet.
- Closer spacing. Some installers space wall screws at 12 in in the field for a stiffer wall: 7 × 5 = 35 per sheet.
- By weight: USG’s 2.7 lb per 1,000 sq ft is about 0.09 lb per sheet. A 1 lb box does about 11 sheets; a 5 lb box about 58.
The edge screws are counted on each sheet even though two sheets meet on one stud: each sheet gets its own row 3/8 in or more in from its edge. If you glue the board to the studs, the board maker’s instructions allow fewer field screws; follow them.
On a ceiling the spacing tightens to 12 in: how many drywall screws per sheet for a ceiling. Bigger sheets: how many drywall screws per 4x12 sheet. For the mud to cover them, how much mud per sheet of drywall.
