How many sheets of drywall for a 12×12 ceiling?
A 12 × 12 ft ceiling (144 square feet) takes exactly 3 sheets of 4 × 12 drywall laid side by side across the joists. With 4 × 8 sheets it takes 5.
How to work it out
- Ceiling: 12 ft × 12 ft = 144 sq ft
- 144 sq ft ÷ 48 sq ft per 4×12 sheet = 3 → 3 sheets
A 12 × 12 ceiling is one of the few cases where the sheet count is exact: three 4 × 12 sheets laid side by side cover it with no cuts except for the light box. With 4 × 8 sheets the layout needs butt joints and some waste.

- Drywall area
- 144 sq ft
- You’ll also need (USG estimate)
- about 1.4 gal of joint compound, 53 ft of paper tape and 0.4 lb of 1-1/4 in drywall screws
- Sheets are counted by area plus the waste allowance. Plan the layout too: hang ceilings first, run sheets across the joists or studs, and stagger the end joints.
Sheets by sheet size (same room)
| Sheet | Sheets to buy |

| 4×8 | 5 sheets |
| 4×10 | 4 sheets |
| 4×12 | 3 sheets |
| 54 in × 12 | 3 sheets |
Laying out a 12×12 ceiling
- 4 × 12: 3 sheets, no waste. Run them across the joists (perpendicular), each one spanning wall to wall. Long edges meet on the tapered edges, which are the easiest joints to finish.
- 4 × 8: 5 sheets. 144 ÷ 32 is 4.5, and the half-sheet pieces have to land on joists, so plan five with offcuts; with a 10% allowance the count is still 5.
- Thickness. USG’s frame-spacing table allows 1/2 in board perpendicular on ceilings with joists up to 24 in apart, but only 16 in if a water-based texture will be sprayed on. 5/8 in board is stiffer and is common on ceilings.
- Weight overhead. A 1/2 in 4 × 12 sheet is about 77 lb (60 lb lightweight); a 5/8 in Type X about 106 lb. A panel lift is worth renting for three sheets.
Screw spacing on ceilings is tighter than on walls: USG’s guide spaces screws 12 in apart on ceilings and 16 in on walls. See how many drywall screws per sheet for a ceiling.
