How many sheets of drywall for a 2 car garage?
A 24 × 24 ft two-car garage with 8 ft walls needs 28 sheets of 4 × 12 drywall for the walls and ceiling: 1,212 square feet after a 16 × 7 ft garage door and an entry door, plus 10% waste.
How to work it out
- Walls: 2 × (24 ft + 24 ft) × 8 ft = 768 sq ft − openings 132 sq ft = 636 sq ft
- Ceiling: 24 ft × 24 ft = 576 sq ft
- 1,212 sq ft × 1.1 waste ÷ 48 sq ft per 4×12 sheet = 27.78 → 28 sheets
A 24 × 24 ft garage is the common two-car size, and it is a big drywall job: 576 sq ft of ceiling alone, plus nearly 640 sq ft of wall after the doors. 4 × 12 sheets suit it, since every wall and the ceiling are multiples of 12 ft.

- 15 sheets
- Ceiling alone (if bought separately)
- 14 sheets
- You’ll also need (USG estimate)
- about 12.1 gal of joint compound, 448 ft of paper tape and 3.3 lb of 1-1/4 in drywall screws
- Sheets are counted by area plus the waste allowance. Plan the layout too: hang ceilings first, run sheets across the joists or studs, and stagger the end joints.
- Walls (15) and ceiling (14) rounded up separately add to 29, one more than the room as a whole: offcuts from one part fill gaps in the other, so the whole-room count is enough if you buy and cut them together.

What to know about drywalling a 2-car garage
- 1,212 sq ft. Walls 4 × 24 × 8 = 768 sq ft, less 112 for the garage door and 20 for the house door, plus the 576 sq ft ceiling.
- 28 sheets of 4 × 12 with 10% waste (27.8 rounded up), or 42 sheets of 4 × 8.
- 9 ft walls: about 30 sheets of 4 × 12. 20 × 20 garage: about 21.
- Fire separation. Under the IRC (R302.6), the garage side of a wall shared with the house needs at least 1/2 in gypsum board, and the garage ceiling needs 5/8 in Type X when there are habitable rooms above. Your local code may amend this, so ask your building department before buying; it changes the board, the weight and the price.
Garage ceilings often hold storage or insulation above; USG’s data sheets list how much unsupported insulation weight a ceiling board can carry at each frame spacing, and the garage-door opener and lights need blocking. 5/8 in Type X 4 × 12 sheets weigh about 106 lb each, so 28 of them are well over a ton: have them delivered and stocked.
Finishing 1,212 sq ft takes about 12 gallons of joint compound (three 4.5 gal pails) and 450 ft of tape by USG’s estimate; see the joint compound calculator. Painting the ceiling afterward: how much paint for a 20x20 ceiling shows the scale.
