How much drywall tape per sheet?
About 12 feet of joint tape per 4 × 8 sheet of drywall, from USG’s estimate of 370 feet per 1,000 square feet. A 250 ft roll tapes about 21 sheets.
How to work it out
- 1 × 32 sq ft = 32 sq ft
- 32 sq ft × 370 ft per 1,000 sq ft (USG) = 12 ft → 1 roll of 250 ft
USG publishes its drywall estimate per 1,000 sq ft, and the tape figure is 370 ft. Per sheet, that is just under 12 ft for a 4 × 8 and about 18 ft for a 4 × 12: the joints on each sheet’s edges, shared with its neighbours, plus its share of the inside corners.

- Outside corners take corner bead, not tape; use the corner bead calculator for those.
- Paper tape is creased down the middle for inside corners. Self-adhesive mesh tape is easier for beginners on flat joints but should be used with a setting-type compound for strength.
Joint tape by number of sheets
| Sheets | Joint tape | Rolls to buy |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 12 ft | 1 roll |
| 10 | 118 ft | 1 roll |
| 20 | 237 ft | 1 roll |
| 40 | 474 ft | 2 rolls |
| 80 | 947 ft | 4 rolls |
Tape per sheet, by size
- 4 × 8 (32 sq ft): about 11.8 ft.
- 4 × 10 (40 sq ft): about 14.8 ft.
- 4 × 12 (48 sq ft): about 17.8 ft.
- Per roll: a 75 ft roll does about 6 sheets of 4 × 8, a 250 ft roll about 21, a 500 ft roll about 42.
Bigger sheets mean fewer joints per square foot in practice, especially fewer butt joints, so 4 × 12 board often uses a little less tape than the per-area figure suggests. Rooms with lots of inside corners, closets and soffits use more. If you’re buying for one room, a 250 ft roll is plenty; for a whole basement, the 500 ft roll is the better buy.
The compound for the same sheet is on how much mud per sheet of drywall, and the screws on how many drywall screws per 4x8 sheet. The full room estimate is how many sheets of drywall for a 12x12 room.
