How many square feet in a 4×8 sheet of drywall?
A 4 × 8 sheet of drywall is 32 square feet. A 4 × 10 sheet is 40, a 4 × 12 is 48 and a 54 in × 12 ft sheet is 54 square feet.
Sheet size to square feet (and weight)
- 4×8: 32 sq ft × 1.6 lb/sq ft = 51.2 lb per sheet
A 4 × 8 sheet covers 32 sq ft, which is why drywall estimates divide by 32. The other standard lengths go up in 4 sq ft steps for every extra foot of length, because standard board is 4 ft wide.
Adjust for your project
- Area per sheet
- 32 sq ft
- Weight per area
- 1.6 lb/sq ft
- Weight figure: National Gypsum Gold Bond 1/2 in regular. Manufacturers give these as approximate, for design and shipping; damp board weighs more.
- Check what your vehicle and its tires are rated to carry before loading; yards deliver and stock board for a reason.

Square feet per sheet, by size
- 4 × 8: 32 sq ft. 4 × 9: 36. 4 × 10: 40. 4 × 12: 48. 4 × 14: 56. 4 × 16: 64. USG and National Gypsum both list 4 ft widths in lengths from 8 to 16 ft.
- 54 in × 12 ft: 54 sq ft. The wider board covers a 9 ft wall in two horizontal rows.
- Metric: 1200 × 2400 mm = 2.88 m²; 1200 × 2700 = 3.24; 1200 × 3000 = 3.6.
- What it covers in practice: less than its area, once doors, windows and cut-offs are allowed for. That is the 10–15% waste allowance in the drywall calculator.
Square feet per sheet is also the unit for the finishing estimates: USG’s 10 gallons of compound and 370 ft of tape per 1,000 sq ft work out to about 0.32 gallons and 12 ft per 4 × 8 sheet. See how much mud per sheet of drywall and how much drywall tape per sheet.
A 4 × 8 sheet of 1/2 in board weighs about 51 lb regular and 40 lb lightweight: how much does a 4x8 sheet of drywall weigh. The full size and thickness list is in the drywall sizes chart.
