How much does a 4×12 sheet of drywall weigh?
A 4 × 12 sheet of 1/2 in regular drywall weighs about 76.8 pounds (34.8 kilograms): 48 square feet at 1.6 pounds per square foot. Lightweight 1/2 in is about 60 pounds; 5/8 in Type X about 106.
How to work it out
- 4×12: 48 sq ft × 1.6 lb/sq ft = 76.8 lb per sheet
Four-by-twelve sheets save taping, but they are a two-person lift. At 48 sq ft, a 1/2 in regular sheet is nearly 77 lb and floppy, a 5/8 in fire-rated sheet more than 100.

What a 4×12 sheet weighs
- 1/2 in regular: 76.8 lb at National Gypsum’s 1.6 lb per sq ft.
- 1/2 in lightweight: 60 lb at USG UltraLight’s 1.25 (58–67 lb across its 1.2–1.4 range).

Long sheets also need a way in: 12 ft won’t turn through many hallways and stairwells. Measure the route before ordering, and ask the supplier to boom them through a window or carry them in. Once inside, store them flat on spacers, not leaning against a wall.
