How many tubes of caulk per window?
The outside perimeter of a 3 × 5 ft window is 16 feet. At a 1/4 in bead that is 0.57 of a 10.1 fl oz tube: one tube does about two windows.
How to work it out
- Bead: π × (0.25 in ÷ 2)² · one 10.1 fl oz tube ÷ bead = 30.9 ft per tube
- 16 ft × 1.1 extra ÷ 30.9 ft = 0.57 → 1 tube
Re-caulking windows is mostly an exterior job: the joint between the window frame and the siding or trim, all the way around. For a typical 3 × 5 ft window that is 16 ft of joint, a little over half a tube at a 1/4 in bead.

What to know about caulking windows
- 16 ft per window. 2 × (3 + 5) ft, around the outside of the frame.
- 0.57 tubes per window at 1/4 in with 10% extra, so a tube does nearly two windows. At 3/16 in, a tube does about three.
- Ten windows: about six tubes. Buy a few more if the old joints are wide or uneven.
- Inside too? Interior casing gaps are usually narrower (1/8–3/16 in) and take about a quarter of a tube per window.
Use an exterior-rated sealant on the outside and check its paint-ready time. Don’t seal over the weep holes at the bottom of vinyl or aluminum window frames; they let water out. Joints wider than ½ in need backer rod first.
Window sizes vary: the four-digit codes on window labels (2840 = 2 ft 8 in × 4 ft 0 in) are explained in door and window sizes. The full yield chart is on how many feet of caulk in a tube; painting the house afterwards is on how much paint for a 1,500 sq ft house exterior.
