How many cans of spray paint to paint a door?
Both sides and the edges of a 32 × 80 in interior door are 37.7 sq ft and need 7.54 cans of spray paint for two coats at 10 square feet per can: 8 cans.
How to work it out
- 80 in × 32 in × 2 faces = 35.56 sq ft
- 80 in × 1.38 in × 2 faces = 1.53 sq ft
- 32 in × 1.38 in × 2 faces = 0.61 sq ft
- Total 37.7 sq ft × 2 coats ÷ 10 sq ft per can = 7.54 → 8 cans
You can spray a door from cans, but it is the most expensive way to do it. Both faces and the edges of a standard 32 × 80 in door come to nearly 38 sq ft, and two coats take seven or eight cans where a single quart of enamel would do.
Adjust for your project
- Surface to paint (one coat)
- 37.7 sq ft
- Cans, before rounding up
- 7.54
- Rounded and spindly parts (legs, rungs, wicker, wire) waste a lot of spray past their edges. On those, buy one can more than the count.
- Spray in light passes 8–12 in from the surface, overlapping each pass by about half, and follow the can’s recoat window.
Cans by number of coats
| Coats | Cans, before rounding up | Cans of paint |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 3.77 | 4 cans |
| 2 | 7.54 | 8 cans |
| 3 | 11.31 | 12 cans |
Spray cans vs a quart for a door
- Eight cans at 10 sq ft per can, or four at 20. Eight cans of spray paint typically cost several times a quart of good enamel, which covers the same door twice with paint left over.
- One side only: about 3.6 cans for two coats (17.8 sq ft): four.
- Where cans make sense: a metal door or a louvered closet door with dozens of slats, where a brush is slow and drips in every corner.
- Big flat panels show uneven passes. Lay the door flat on sawhorses, mask the hinges, and spray in long, overlapping passes from edge to edge.
For a whole door with a roller and brush, see how much paint for a door: one quart for both sides, two coats. For an HVLP sprayer and a quart instead of cans, the coverage maths is the same as brushing plus overspray. A front door painted by brush is on how much paint for a front door.
