- Texture powder
- 18 lb
- Ceiling area
- 144 sq ft
- One bag covers
- 256 sq ft
12 ft × 12 ft = 144 sq ft
144 sq ft ÷ 8 sq ft per lb = 18 lb of powder ÷ 32 lb per bag = 0.56 → 1 bag
- USG warns that keeping within the 8–10 sq ft per lb range prevents cracking, poor hide and bond problems: spraying thinner to stretch a bag is a false saving.
- Prime new drywall before texturing, and mask walls and floors completely; overspray travels.
Bags by ceiling width (same length)
| Width | Ceiling area | Texture powder | Bags to buy |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 ft | 96 sq ft | 12 lb | 1 bag |
| 10 ft | 120 sq ft | 15 lb | 1 bag |
| 12 ft | 144 sq ft | 18 lb | 1 bag |
| 14 ft | 168 sq ft | 21 lb | 1 bag |
| 16 ft | 192 sq ft | 24 lb | 1 bag |
| 20 ft | 240 sq ft | 30 lb | 1 bag |
The rate is per pound of dry powder. USG’s submittal for its Sheetrock Ceiling Spray Texture gives 8–10 sq ft per lb and sells it in 32 and 40 lb bags, so one 32 lb bag sprays about 256–320 sq ft of ceiling. New to this? Drywall words explained.
How much popcorn texture: the formula
powder (lb) = ceiling area ÷ coverage per lb bags = powder ÷ bag weight 32 lb bag at 8 sq ft/lb = 256 sq ft · 40 lb bag = 320 sq ft
A 12 × 12 ft ceiling is 144 sq ft: 18 lb of powder at 8 sq ft per lb, so one 32 lb bag with plenty for practice and touch-ups. A 20 × 20 ceiling (400 sq ft) needs 50 lb: two 32 lb bags, or two 40 lb bags.
Patching or removing instead?
- Patching a spot: small aerosol cans and tubs of popcorn patch are sold for repairs; follow the coverage on the can.
- Painting popcorn: it can be painted with a thick-nap roller or a sprayer, but it soaks up paint; see how much paint for a 12x12 ceiling for the textured figure.
- Removing popcorn: test for asbestos first if the texture may date from before the 1980s. After removal, a smooth ceiling usually needs a skim coat: see the skim coat calculator.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a bag of popcorn ceiling texture cover?
USG’s ceiling spray texture applies at 8–10 sq ft per lb of powder, so a 32 lb bag covers about 256–320 sq ft and a 40 lb bag about 320–400 sq ft.
How many bags of popcorn texture for a 12x12 ceiling?
One 32 lb bag: 144 sq ft needs about 18 lb of powder at 8 sq ft per lb.
Is it safe to scrape off an old popcorn ceiling?
