How many rolls of painter’s tape for a 12×12 room?
Taping the ceiling line, the baseboards, one door and two windows in a 12 × 12 ft room takes about 165 ft of painter’s tape with overlaps, which is 1 roll of 60 yards (0.91 of a roll).
How to work it out
- ceiling 48 ft + baseboards 45 ft + 1 door 18 ft + 2 windows 38.7 ft = 149.7 ft
- × 1.1 = 165 ft ÷ 180 ft per roll = 0.91 → 1 roll
A bedroom-sized room uses most of one 60 yd roll if you tape every edge. The ceiling line and the baseboards are each about 45–48 ft; the casings around one door and two windows add about 56 ft more.

- Tape is cheap next to repainting a ceiling line. If the count is close to a whole roll, buy one more.
- Press the edge down firmly with a putty knife or card, and pull the tape at an angle once the last coat is dry to the touch, before it fully cures.

| 10 ft | 156 ft | 1 roll |
| 12 ft | 165 ft | 1 roll |

Where the tape goes
- Ceiling line: 48 ft. The full perimeter of the room.
- Baseboards: 45 ft. The perimeter less a 3 ft doorway.
- One door casing: 18 ft. Up both sides and across the top of a 36 × 80 in door with its casing.
- Two window casings: about 39 ft. Around a 3 × 5 ft window and its casing, twice.
- Overlaps and torn ends: 10%. About 150 ft becomes 165 ft.
That is 91% of a 60 yd (180 ft) roll. If you are also masking the trim side for a second color, or the floor along carpet, buy a second roll; tape is the cheapest item on the list. If you cut in the ceiling by hand and only tape the trim, one roll does about two rooms.
The paint for the same room is on how much paint for a 12x12 room, and the trim paint on how much trim paint for one room. A bigger room is how much paint for a 12x14 room.

For cutting in along ceilings, corners and trim. A nylon-polyester brush is what the latex data sheets recommend.

Canvas stays put and soaks up drips; plastic is cheaper but slippery underfoot and spreads wet paint.
