How much paint for a 12×16 deck?
A 12 × 16 ft deck (192 square feet) needs about 1.92 gallons of deck paint or solid-color stain for two coats at 200 square feet per gallon: 2 gallons.
How to work it out
- Floor: 16 ft × 12 ft = 192 sq ft
- 192 sq ft × 2 coats ÷ 200 sq ft/gal = 1.92 gal → 2 gallons
Twelve by sixteen is one of the most common deck sizes: room for a table and a grill. Its 192 sq ft floor takes two gallons of deck paint or solid stain for two coats, which is convenient because that is how most deck coatings are sold.

- Board edges and gaps take a little extra; the deck floor is counted as flat.
- Deck paints and solid stains form a film that can peel on horizontal boards. Clean and dry the wood thoroughly and follow the label’s recoat window.
- Old house? If it was built before 1978, read lead paint safety before you sand or scrape: EPA advises assuming old paint contains lead until it is tested.

What to know about a 12×16 deck
- 1.92 gallons for two coats at 200 sq ft per gallon, the low end of the solid-stain range. If your boards take the product well, you will have most of a quart left.
- Railing on the two long sides and one end (40 ft): about 210 sq ft more, for a total of about 4 gallons, or a 5-gallon pail.
- Semi-transparent: one coat on newer wood is about 0.77 gallons; on weathered wood about 1.3.
- Board direction. Work along the 16 ft boards, two or three at a time, from the house outward so you finish at the stairs.
A deck this size often has stairs down to the yard: add the steps under More options. If the house siding is being painted too, the deck is usually coated last so drips from above don’t land on fresh deck coating.
